CONCESIÓN DE AYUDA AL PROYECTO EUROPEO MIGRATE (Miniaturizing and Integrating Programmable Photonic Processors) PARA LA INVESTIGACIÓN INDUSTRIAL DE PROCESADORES FOTÓNICOS PROGRAMABLES.

La Secretaría de Estado de Industria, a través del programa IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) en Microelectrónica y Comunicaciones, ha concedido a iPronics una ayuda para la ejecución del proyecto MIGRATE (Miniaturizing and Integrating Programmable Photonic Processors). Esta iniciativa se lleva a cabo en colaboración con líderes europeos del sector tecnológico y refuerza el compromiso con la innovación, la competitividad y la soberanía tecnológica de Europa en el ámbito de la fotónica integrada.
RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO
El proyecto MIGRATE tiene como objetivo evolucionar el actual prototipo de laboratorio de un procesador fotónico programable Plug & Play hacia una validación técnica avanzada de sus componentes y subsistemas, con vistas a su futura introducción en tres mercados verticales:
- Procesamiento fotónico y computación científica.
- Comunicaciones móviles 5G/6G y transceptores de nueva generación.
- Computación fotónica para centros de datos periféricos (edge computing).
Este trabajo se enmarca dentro del WORKSTREAM COMMUNICATE del IPCEI, centrado en impulsar tecnologías clave para las comunicaciones del futuro. El proyecto apuesta por innovaciones disruptivas como avanzar la fotónica programable más allá del estado del arte, explorar nuevas áreas de procesamiento y computación flexible con prestaciones inéditas, fomentar el diseño y la fabricación sostenible de circuitos integrados fotónicos y desarrollar transceptores y conmutadores inteligentes que den respuesta a los retos de capacidad, velocidad y conectividad de las futuras redes 5G/6G.
OBJETIVOS TÉCNICOS
El proyecto MIGRATE establece una serie de objetivos técnicos orientados a consolidar la próxima generación de tecnologías fotónicas y su integración con sistemas electrónicos avanzados. Entre ellos destacan:
- Investigar y desarrollar bloques de construcción fotónicos avanzados, junto con nuevos esquemas de integración híbrida entre plataformas fotónicas y electrónicas, para mejorar la eficiencia y la escalabilidad de los sistemas.
- Diseñar y fabricar subsistemas heterogéneos basados en tecnologías de semiconductores de última generación, incorporando soluciones de encapsulado innovadoras que permitan su futura industrialización.
- Crear SoCs ópticos y digitales destinados a comunicaciones ópticas y radio, incluyendo el desarrollo de procesadores analógicos programables con aplicaciones en diferentes mercados.
- Impulsar aceleradores de procesamiento de datos personalizados, integrando extensiones de inteligencia artificial y aprendizaje automático (IA/ML) orientadas a redes 5G/6G y comunicaciones de nueva generación.
- Validar subsistemas ópticos y de radio altamente integrados, mediante el diseño de firmware avanzado que habilite capacidades de control, monitorización y gestión en entornos reales.
- Investigar soluciones en Edge Cloud y Edge AI, orientadas a acelerar procesos en entornos de Internet de las Cosas (IoT) y en redes de acceso radio (RAN), con el fin de optimizar la latencia, la seguridad y la eficiencia energética.
RETOS TECNOLÓGICOS
El desarrollo de procesadores fotónicos programables implica superar una serie de retos clave que condicionan su madurez tecnológica y futura industrialización:
- Escalabilidad del núcleo fotónico: reducción de las pérdidas ópticas y de acoplamiento, disminución del consumo energético y miniaturización de las celdas programables, con el fin de aumentar la densidad de integración y mejorar el rendimiento global.
- Integración electrónica y control: transición desde circuitos discretos hacia ASICs electrónicos optimizados, capaces de gestionar de manera eficiente un número creciente de unidades fotónicas y de garantizar una respuesta rápida y fiable en entornos de alta complejidad.
- Software verticalmente integrado: desarrollo de una pila de software completa, desde interfaces de programación de bajo nivel hasta bibliotecas orientadas a aplicaciones, incorporando funciones avanzadas de autocalibración, autorrecuperación y optimización de recursos.
- Empaquetado avanzado: diseño de soluciones de integración heterogénea que permitan la fabricación de un prototipo miniaturizado, robusto y energéticamente eficiente, listo para su validación en entornos controlados y su futura incorporación a productos comerciales.

GRANT AWARDED TO THE EUROPEAN MIGRATE PROJECT (Miniaturization and Integration of Programmable Photonic Processors) FOR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH INTO PROGRAMMABLE PHOTONIC PROCESSORS.
The Spanish Ministry of Industry, through the IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) program in Microelectronics and Communications, has awarded iPronics a grant for the implementation of the MIGRATE (Miniaturizing and Integrating Programmable Photonic Processors) project. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with European leaders in the technology sector and reinforces the commitment to innovation, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty in Europe in the field of integrated photonics.
PROJECT SUMMARY
The MIGRATE project aims to evolve the current laboratory prototype of a Plug & Play programmable photonic processor towards advanced technical validation of its components and subsystems, with a view to its future introduction in three vertical markets:
- Photonic processing and scientific computing.
- 5G/6G mobile communications and next-generation transceivers.
- Photonic computing for edge data centers (edge computing).
This work is part of the IPCEI’s WORKSTREAM COMMUNICATE, which focuses on promoting key technologies for future communications. The project is committed to disruptive innovations, such as advancing programmable photonics beyond the current state of the art, exploring new areas of flexible processing and computing with unprecedented capabilities, promoting the sustainable design and manufacture of photonic integrated circuits, and developing smart transceivers and switches that respond to the capacity, speed, and connectivity challenges of future 5G/6G networks.
TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES
The MIGRATE project establishes a series of technical objectives aimed at consolidating the next generation of photonic technologies and their integration with advanced electronic systems. These include:
- Research and develop advanced photonic building blocks, along with new hybrid integration schemes between photonic and electronic platforms, to improve system efficiency and scalability.
- Design and manufacture heterogeneous subsystems based on state-of-the-art semiconductor technologies, incorporating innovative encapsulation solutions that enable their future industrialization.
- Create optical and digital SoCs for optical and radio communications, including the development of programmable analog processors with applications in different markets.
- Drive custom data processing accelerators, integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) extensions geared toward 5G/6G networks and next-generation communications.
- Validate highly integrated optical and radio subsystems by designing advanced firmware that enables control, monitoring, and management capabilities in real-world environments.
- Research Edge Cloud and Edge AI solutions aimed at accelerating processes in Internet of Things (IoT) environments and radio access networks (RAN) in order to optimize latency, security, and energy efficiency.
TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGES
The development of programmable photonic processors involves overcoming a series of key challenges that determine their technological maturity and future industrialization:
- Photonic core scalability: reduction of optical and coupling losses, lower energy consumption, and miniaturization of programmable cells, with the aim of increasing integration density and improving overall performance.
- Electronic integration and control: transition from discrete circuits to optimized electronic ASICs, capable of efficiently managing a growing number of photonic units and ensuring fast and reliable response in highly complex environments.
- Vertically integrated software: development of a complete software stack, from low-level programming interfaces to application-oriented libraries, incorporating advanced self-calibration, self-recovery, and resource optimization features.
- Advanced packaging: design of heterogeneous integration solutions that enable the manufacture of a miniaturized, robust, and energy-efficient prototype, ready for validation in controlled environments and future incorporation into commercial products.
