Partnering with Barcelona Supercomputing Center to Advance Programmable Optical AI Networks

By: Christian Dupont, CEO, iPronics – AI infrastructure is reaching a point where scaling compute requires rethinking the network. As GPU clusters grow to support workloads like Large Language Models (LLMs) and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE), networking needs to become more dynamic and more closely aligned with the behavior of AI workloads.
Today, we are announcing a two-year strategic technology collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) to advance programmable optical networking for next-generation GPU-based AI and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. (Read the full press release here)
First, we are fundamentally rethinking network architecture. At the scale required for LLM and MoE workloads, static interconnects create severe communication bottlenecks. Networking needs to become far more dynamic and closely aligned with the actual behavior of AI workloads, which is where iPronics comes in.
Equally critical is delivering a truly turnkey architecture that streamlines deployment.Historically, integrating programmable optics into data centers required complex, custom software development, but iPronics ONE changes that. By integrating our rack-ready, plug-and-play platform into BSC’s research-class GPU and HPC environment, we are demonstrating dynamic, workload-aware network control across both hardware and software. This offers cloud providers and hyperscalers a direct pathway to maximize GPU utilization, lower latency, and cut energy consumption without replacing their existing software stack.
Finally, what makes this partnership unique is our joint commitment to full-stack innovation. iPronics provides the programmable optical switching platform, low-level control software, and open APIs, while BSC develops the software intelligence above the switch-management layer. Together, our teams are connecting the communication requirements of AI applications directly with dynamically reconfigurable optical connectivity. Working alongside Antonio J. Peña and the expert team at BSC will generate vital system-level insights to shape the architecture of future AI systems.
As we continue to expand our global reach and push optical networking to new heights, this strategic collaboration accelerates our progress toward that goal. We are thrilled to partner with BSC to push the boundaries of programmable optical networking and unlock new levels of efficiency for modern AI infrastructure. We look forward to keeping you apprised of our progress and breakthroughs.
